The witch and her magic wand: multiplication and division by powers of ten

3rd Primary School of Eleftheroupoli
ELEFTHEROUPOLI, GREECE

Age:

Aims:
Pupils should be able to multiply three digit numbers by 10, one and two digit numbers by 100 and one digit numbers by 1000.
To learn to divide tens of hundreds of thousands by 10, hundreds and thousands by 100.
To understand that multiplication and division are opposite processes.

Materials:
A red and yellow stick, a witch's hat, pens, fruit.

Main part:
One pupils dresses up as a witch. We explain that whatever the red magic wand touches multiplies it 10 times , and whatever the yellow wand touches divides it by 10, it becomes 10 times smaller.

Alternatively the teacher asks questions such as: if the witch touches a 3 cm worm how long will it become? If the witch touches a 300 kg giant 3 times, how much weight will he gain(or lose)?

At the end of the activity the pupils are divided into 2 groups and each group asks questions like those using the red or the yellow wands.
