Musical chairs

3rd Primary School of Eleftheroupoli
ELEFTHEROUPOLI, GREECE

Age:
6 years old

Aims:
In real life people use numbers when dealing with situations involving comparing or estimating quantities. With this activity we are trying to organize, evaluate and expand the children's knowledge. We call it “indirect estimation”

Material:
Chairs, cards with numbers from 1-20 written on, a cd-player

Introduction:
We place as many chairs as the number of children in the middle of the classroom We play some music and we call the pupils to run round the chairs while the music is playing. When the teacher pauses the music, the pupils have to sit on the chair that is nearest to them. Each child has to call out his/her number loudly.

Main part:
Then the music starts again, but this time we have removed one chair, so there is an extra pupil. When the music stops again one pupil is left out. Finally only one child gets to sit on the chair.
