Age:
9 to 10 years

Aims:
To recognise multiplication in a context of counting combinations.

Material:
Nine circles cut out of sheets of cardboard and markers.

Introduction:
The teacher gives out the circles to the pupils and asks them to draw three types of eyebrows, three types of eyes and three types of different mouths:

Main part:
The pupils investigate the different ways to make a face ( you can see some of them in the photographs).
Round up:
The pupils state that they can make 27 different faces and relate this number to the result of the multiplication: 3x3x3

Observations:
The teacher added two circles (a mouth and a pair of eyes) to make the activity a little more difficult. The pupils have designed various combinations; they compared the results and had fun.
