• To trnslate everyday language into language using mathematical symbols.
• To resolve sums.

Material:

Pieces of card and felt tip pens

Vocabulary:

Difference, total, subtraction, addition.

Introduction:

The teacher writes on the cards this kind of phrase: "subtract the difference between 132 and 75 from the addition of 193 and 27 ". Then she asks the pupils to turn it into correct mathematical language, creating a sequence of operations and a pupil writes it on the blacboard.

Main part:

Every pupils tries to formulate the required operations, trying to find the correct conversion of the terms, to subtract, add, find the difference…

Observations:

This exercise gives the pupils practice in using the terms related to addition and subtraction and introduces them to the use of combined operations.
