LESSON 1
ADDING WHOLE NUMBERS
Age:
9-10 years old

Aims:
To learn how to add “the Swedish way”
To teach the pupils the value of every digit in a number.

Materials:
Pencil and paper

Vocabulary:
Units, tens, hundreds.

Introduction:
You do these exercises together on the blackboard! You start by adding the tens and then the units in the first three examples. Then in the other examples you start by adding the hundreds then the tens and finally the units!

Main part:
The teacher asks the pupils to do the following exercise.

 

Round up:
We think this method help them to understand the different value of the figures!
LESSON 2
ADDING DECIMAL NUMBERS

Age:
11-13 years old

Aims:
To learn how to add decimal numbers “the Swedish way”

Materials:
Pencil and paper

Vocabulary:
Tenths, hundredths, thousandths.

Introduction:
You do these exercises together on the blackboard! You start by adding the tens, then the units, the tenths etc.

Main part:
The teacher asks the pupils to do the following exercise.

Round up:
If we have pupils who have difficulties with this method we use the standard algorithm.
