Combining addition and subtraction
Skogsbackeskolan
Karlstad
Age:
6-7 years old

Aims:
This exercise is for students to learn and understand simple addition using numbers from 1 to 5 and also to see the connection between addition and subtraction.

Materials:
We are happy to work with maths outdoors and use materials we can find there. This time we used pine cones.

Vocabulary:
Plus, minus, equals

Introduction:
The children were divided into groups. In each group there were three, four or five children. (Each group representing a number of 3, 4 or 5) In each group one of the children were asked to pick one cone. Another to pick two cones and if the group was bigger to get four and five.

Main part:
Now the children, one by one in each group, st00d with their backs to their friends. The child told the others how many cones he or she had. (For example 1.) The pupil with the right amount of cones for the group ( 4 if it was a 5-group) would come forward so that together they could turn around and show that for example 1 plus 4 equals 5. When one of the children stepped back they could notice that as in this case 5 minus 4 equals 1.

Round up:
Afterwards we talked about the meaning of plus, addition, minus, subtraction and how they belong together in a rather clear way.
