Division with wooden sticks
Skogsbackeskolan
Karlstad

Age:
10-12 years old

Aims:
To practise mental division

Material:
Five wooden sticks marked with numbers, such as 2,2,4,5 and 10

Introduction:
You prepare the sticks by writing the numbers on them.
You also need five plastic hoops. You put the sticks in the ground, spreading them out from each other.

Main part:
You start with 200 points. You are suppose to throw the 5 hoops, but you don´t have to throw them all. Your task is to divide 200 with the number on the stick you just throw the hoop around, and try to come as close to zero as possible.

Round up:
You can count the result as following:
The first hoop lands around stick with number 5, then you divide 200/5 and that makes 40. The next throw lands around 10 and then you divide 40/10 and that makes 4. Now you can decide to stop or continue to se if you come closer then 4.
If you get 12,5 you round up to 13. If nobody get closer then 4 you are the winner.
