THREE WAYS OF SUBTRACTING
Skogsbackeskolan
Karlstad
Age:
10 to12 years old

Aims:
To give the pupils sustainable methods and to understand the place value of all the digits.

Materials:
You just do it in your maths notebook!

Introduction:
The teacher does some example on the whiteboard and then tells the children to do some more by themselves. We give you three different methods!

1. 658-235=600-200+50-30+8-5=400+20+3=423
2. Now you count how far it is between the numbers! 423-281=9+10+100+23=142. When you explain it for the pupils you can say: You start by asking them how far it is from 281 up to the next ten. Then from 290 up to the next hundred. From 300 up to the next hundred. Then from 400 up to 423.
3. The third method we teach is the algorithm. 421-283= 138 (look at picture nr 1.)

Main part:
Examples for method nr 1:
793-502=
194-53=
975-872=

Examples for method nr 2:
325-141=
461-239=
948-354=

Examples for method nr 3:
343-125=
456-273=
998-379=

Round up:
We teach all the methods and the pupils have worked examples of them in their notebooks. Then they can choose which method they find most suitable.
