A big one that got away, a
meteorite of perhaps a thousand tons was deflected from its course by earth's
atmosphere on August 10, 1972. Leaving a trail over the Tetons, the fireball
was visible from Utah to Alberta, Canada. Its oblique angle of approach
caused it to skip off the atmosphere like a stone on water. If it had struck,
it could have caused an explossion comparable to a small atomic bomb.
