Hale Bopp: Comet of the Century?

Maps

Last update: May 22, 1997

Comet Hale-Bopp will be "recoverable" later this year for observers at latitudes less than 35 degrees North. This chart shows Hale-Bopp's approximate Alt/Az position from September through November of 1997 for observers at 30 deg. North latitude. If current light curve estimates hold up, it may be naked-eye visible through October.
Additionally, on October 24, Comet Hale-Bopp will pass within 3 arcminutes of Gamma Vela (1.8 mag).
The author used information from Expert Astronomer, and Adobe Photoshop 4.0 to assemble the image.

There has been a tremendous interest in the animated finding chart for Comet Hale Bopp by the Soenderborg group announced at the ESO site! As a result, the line appears to have been completely overloaded, and we have now installed a copy [GIF; 8k] of this file at our site.
