A globular cluster in the Andromeda galaxy

Hubble Space Telescope has captured a view of a globular cluster called G1. Orbiting the Andromeda galaxy (M31), it's 2,2 milions light-years away from us. It consists of at least 300,000 old stars and is the brightest among all known similar clusters in the 20 nearest galaxies (the Local Group).

These clusters probably were formed shortly after the beginning of the universe.

The crisp image is comparable to ground-based telescope views of similar clusters orbiting the Milky Way. G1, however, is nearly 100 times farther away.
