Edge-on view of Saturn's rings

When Eric Karkoschka obtained the upper picture of Saturn (6 August 1995), Earth was almost in the plane of Saturn's rings, thus the rings appear edge-on.

Titan, the biggest moon, is casting a shadow on Saturn. On the right appear Mimas, Tethys, Janus, and Enceladus.

The bottom photograph shows Saturn with its rings slightly tilted. It was obtained November 17, when the Sun was setting on the ring plane. The moon on the upper left of Saturn is Tethys.
