4. Working with HEADLINES. Headlines of newspapers
are always hard to understand at first sight. Sometimes they play with
words, give double meanings, cut out articles/prepositions, and so on.
You are going to do a simple practice with the headlines of the four columns
above. Write an explanation for each headline in the chart below. What
does it mean? Why was it chosen?
Why do this?
To practise how to interpret headlines which are always very carefully
chosen, usually concise and economical in terms of words.
To practise writing good explanations accurately related to the heading
and to the story.
