Brundtland
Commission
The Brundtland
Commission is also called World Commission on Environment
and Development (WCED). The name Brundtland comes from the Chairman
(President) of the United Nation Comission. His name was Gro Harlem
Brundtland. The commission was created in 1983 to take care about
environment and natural resources.
During years
we have polluted the earth. Factories and chemical spills
are good examples of this pollution. The United Nation was
worried about the deterioration of environment and natural resources
and the consequences of that deterioration for economic and social
development so they created this comission. Their main aim is that
all countries recognize that environmental problems affect all of
us, so all nations have to establish policies for sustainable development.
The Commission
talks about sustainable development and the change of politics
needed for achieving that. The definition of this term is:
"Sustainable
development is development that takes care of the present needs
without compromising the ability of future generations to take care
of their own needs"
