First World War

Activity: Blackadder Video

Episode: General Hospital.

TIPS FOR TEACHERS:

This activity will be very useful to illustrate what really happened at the front during World War One. As you probably know, Blackadder was a very popular TV series in the 80's. Some of its actors and actresses have become very popular since then: Rowan Atkinson, Miranda Richardson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, among others. Your students are likely to regognise them.

Despite the difficulties of the language, they will probably enjoy the humour, too. Make your students aware that understanding all the dialogues is almost impossible so they should concentrate on the tasks they are asked to do in their worksheets. If you think it necessary, the script of the episode is available here. You will probably find it useful to prepare the activity.

The video takes a bit less than half an hour, so organising your time may be vital depending on the time you wish to spend on it. The activity has been fragmented into short segments. This way you can make sure they are following the story correctly. If they don't, you may help them.

Some of the activities, particularly the warming up introduction, may be prepared at home the day before the students watch the video in the classroom.
