PLAYING WITH DIVISION IN THE GYM

8° circolo didattico Brindisi
Primary school “E. De Amicis” - Tuturano

Age:
8 to 9

Aims:
To encourage and develop mental calculation.
To strengthen the concept of division.

Materials:
Hula-hoops and a whistle

Vocabulary:
Dividend (first term), Divisor (second term), Quotient (the result of a division with or without remainder)

Introduction:
The teacher aims to create some stimulating situations in which the pupils are forced to use mental calculation. So he/she suggests a game in the gym to the pupils. The teacher divides the class into 2 teams of 8. Every team gets into position behind the starting line.
At 7/8 metres of distance from the starting line the teacher puts some hula- hoops for each team on the floor. The rule of the game is that each hula-hoop must contain the same number of children. So every team is obliged to calculate mentally how many children have to go into each hula-hoop. First the teacher places on the floor 4 hula-hoops for each team, then 2 (creating a situation of exact division); then 3 hoops (creating situations of division with remainders) and then 5 and so on….

Main part:
The teacher starts the game by blowing the whistle and the pupils, after calculating the number of children (e.g. 8 kids divided by 3 hoops = 2 kids in each hoop.
Or 8 kids divided by 3 hoops = 2 kids in each hoop and 2 kids out), run and place themselves in the hoops. The team that does not divide itself properly loses. The teacher acts as the referee and she/he keeps the scores and the mistakes.

Observations:
This game gives the pupils the opportunity to practise division and have fun at the same time.
