Putting sweets into groups

Aims:

  • To use fractions in specific situations.
  • To use fractions for groups of objects.

Materials:
Different types of objects

Introduction:
After having understood the concept of the unit as a fraction (for example, a cake, a bar of chocolate), the pupils have to understand the idea of a fraction as an operator applied to a number.

During a school party and using a mathematical expression related to the concept of fraction, the teacher gives the pupils a challenge: s/he asks them for 2/5 of 15 sweets.

Each group of pupils receives some sweets

Main part:
The pupils begin to look for a solution to the challenge.the first group to find the answer are those who make five groups of three sweets and then they choose two groups. they give these six sweets to the teacher.

The game continues using other objects and quantities.

Observations:

During the activity the pupils see that it is much easier to do when they work together and cooperate. They also enjoy the challenges.
