Fractions and dice
Escola Sadako
Barcelona
Age:
7-8

Aims:
•  To introduce the concept of fractions

•  To think about ways of expressing fractions

•  To estimate results

•  To experiment

•  To learn how to record results in a frequency table

•  To learn how to write up the conclusions after an experiment and how to express them arithmetically.

Materials:
Sheets of paper, dice, blackboard

Introduction:
The teacher explains that the class will do an activity with two dice. the pupils have to throw the dice, 20 times each group and calculate the diferrences between the results. they take notes of the results in pairs and then put all the data into the table drawn on the blackboard. Before throwing the dice, each pupils writes down what result they think will occur.

Main part:
Once the first twenty throws have been done, we collect the data and analyse the results. then we start again with another twenty throws.

Vocabulary:
Frequency table, chance, probability, ratio

Roundup:
We observe that the most frequent differenc between the two dice is 1. the students are asked to give a reason for this. They write down their reasons and then discuss them with the class. The teacher then asks the pupils the following question: How could we express mathematically each case? The teacher then asks the class what topic they are starting to work on.
