Napoleon and his hundred soldiers
Escola Sadako
Barcelona
Age:
7-8

Aims:
To introduce the hundreds
To relate hundreds and tens
To work with number squares

Materials:
Coloured card, glue and colouring pencils

Introduction:
We begin the activity by singing the song about Napoleon and his hundred soldiers. (Listen to the song.) The teachers asks the pupils if they would like to dras pictures of the soldiers and if so, how many soldiers would each soldier have to draw. They see they have to draw four soldiers each. the pupils then draw and cut out their four soldiers. When they have their soldiers the teacher asks how would they count them to see if there really are 100.

Main part:
After some discussion the pupils suggest counting the figures in groups of tens. Then they stick the figures on the card in lines of tens. Beside the soldiers we add the corresponding number (10, 20...)

Once the collage is complete we can say that Napoleon's army is made up of a hundred. The pupils can play with the collage by counting how many soldiers there are on top of or below other soldiers.

Roundup:
The teacher observes how the pupils participate and takes note of the arguments they use for further discussion with the class.
