How many faces can we make?

Aims:
To recognise multiplication in a context of counting combinations.

Material:
Seven circles cut out of sheets of cardboard and markers.

Introduction:
The teacher gives out the circles to the pupils and asks them to draw three types of eyebrows, two types of eyes and two types of different mouths:

Main part:
The pupils investigate the different ways to make a face ( you can see some of them in the photographs).
Round up:
The pupils state that they can make 12 different faces and relate this number to the result of the multiplication 2 x 3 x 2.
