Music Notation

When we write we need letters, words, sentences, etc. Music has its own language and when we write or read it, we must be familiar with some basic items.

First of all, have a look at these elements of music notation. When you are familar with them, try this exercise.

After this exercise, let’s have a look at the notes (and their rests). Not all notes are the same length, that is to say, they have different values and that gives them different names. Another thing that you should be aware of is that when we play or listen to music there are times when no sound is heard in the middle of a song. We call this rest. There is one for every note. Here is a chart that can help you learn the names of the notes, their values and their rests.

When you are ready, try this exercise to check how much you have learnt.

If you feel you still need more practice, there's still more:

review exercise 1
review exercise 2
review exercise 3

When you have finished, go to Dotted notes.
