Going
to
the church
in
the country
A
piedi verso
Santa
Maria
e mi rimetto in cammino.

Even this year I'm walking to reach the church in the country
dedicated to Saint Mary (the Holy Virgin). I'm with my parents
and other people. We follow Saint Mary for a while, and then
we take a shortcut, while the car with the statue of Saint
Mary continues along a longer but more comfortable road.
There is such a long way to walk to reach the church. I'm thirsty,
so I stop, open the water-bottle and drink. It's a lovely day
but a little hot. You can hear the birds sing and even see
lizards that run away when we get too close. In the middle
of the road we see a dead cat and my aunt says that a beech-marten
killed it. My legs start hurting and I think that there is
still such a long way to go! I stop again and eat some chocolate,
I drink and then start walking again. I hear the sounds of
the cars that go by fast. I think: "Lucky those who travel
by car!". We reach the bridge and since there isn't any
shade, I put on my kerchief to protect myself from the sun.
I see so many boys who are going to Saint Mary with their
backsacks full of food: they'll stay in the country till late
in the evening. Ahead of us there is a group of people
who are saying the rosary we fall in with them and pray together. Walk,
walk, walk, after more than an hour of walking we finally hear
songs coming from the church and I realize I have
arrived. I climb a slope full of dirt and dust and finally
arrive in front of the church. This long walk from Stigliano
to Saint Mary has been very tiring but what fun, what fun! |
