Fractions and cakes

A reply from Escola Sadako to an activity from D. João de Portel:
Fractions and baguettes

Age:
11 years old

Aims:
The same as those proposed in the original activity

- To understand and use rational numbers as quotients or part-whole relations

- To represent a fraction of a non-negative rational as a finite decimal number

- To use mental and written calculation strategies

- To develop mathematical reasoning and communication

- To compare and order rational numbers represented in different ways

Materials:

  • Worksheet
  • Pencils, rulers, rubbers
  • Cakes

Vocabulary:
The pupils explain their conclusions in English

Introduction:

  • The teacher explains the activity and divides the class into 8 groups with a different number of pupils in each group
  • The pupils read the instructions in silence and ask the teacher any questions they have.

Main part:
The pupils carry out the activities listed on the worksheet.

Round up:
Each group presents their results.

Observations:
Here we have used real cakes to carry out the activity and the fractions compared all have 1 as the numerator, thus allowing the pupils to reach a general conclusion for this type of fractions.
