STUDENT'S WORKSHEET | WEBQUEST 2
  A Present for Carlos

Your friend, Carlos, is deaf. He has problems at home because he does not hear the doorbell or the telephone and he has problems in the street because he does not hear the horns of the cars. In addition, people do not know the sign language and he is very sad because no one makes an effort to communicate with him.

  TASK

You want to give your friend a nice surprise for his birthday: a dog trained to help the deaf. You know that dogs are not toys and when you get them it is for ever, so before getting the dog you have to speak with Carlos's parents to know if they agree with your present. Once you have their acceptance, go ahead!

Activity 1

Visit the following pages and read the information carefully:

:: Webquest General Information Page: here you will find useful hints to facilitate your task and improve the final outcome of your project.

:: Webquest 2 Evaluation Sheet: here you will find how you are going to be rated.

Activity 2

:: Choose a partner to work with and share roles with him/her.

Activity 3

:: Use the Internet to choose a dog for Carlos.

Remember: most of the organizations that train dogs for the disabled just do it for charity but they are extremely careful about whom they give a dog to. So, you will be asked to fill in a form with your friend's details. Do not forget to save/store it and include it in your final presentation.

:: Here are some pages that will help you find the dog you need.

Activity 4

:: Write a postcard telling your friend what the dog is trained for and the advantages he will have with his new pet.

Activity 5

:: As Carlos is a very good friend of yours, you also want to cheer him up by saying Happy birthday, Carlos! in sign language.
(Copy this at the end of the postcard you have written for him.)

:: You may find this information in the following pages:

>> http://www.deafsign.com/ds/index.cfm (with translator)

Activity 6

:: Make a poster or a PowerPoint presentation with the information you have collected, the postcard you have written and, very important, a picture of the dog!

Activity 7

:: Make an oral presentation (do not forget to use the sign language you have learnt!).

Activity 8

:: Share your results with the rest of the groups that have gone through the same project and discuss your ideas with them.

Activity 9

:: Hang your poster in your classroom (providing you have made one, of course).

Activity 10

:: As a group, choose the best three posters and/or PowerPoint presentations. The most outstanding will be shown on the web of the project. The other two will be exhibited on the school noticeboard.

Evaluation

:: Complete Webquest 2 Evaluation Sheet, print it and give it to your teacher.

Conclusion

Congratulations!

Now you know how to use the Internet for shopping and also how to communicate in sign language.

Your friend Carlos, and your teacher, of course, will be very proud of you!
